English and Spanish Classes

LiteracyNetwork.jpg

Cherokee Heights Middle School will be offering FREE English and Spanish language classes and exchange for parents during the spring 2017 semester.  Parents will have the opportunity to attend Free weekly classes of either English or Spanish language instruction and then practice their new skills in conversation exchanges with other parents. These classes are brought by the Literacy Network of Madison and a Graduate Student from the Spanish Department at UW Madison. Classes begin Tuesday, January 22, 2018 and run to March 13th.  6-8pm.  Held at Cherokee Heights Middle School. Free childcare provided. For the last 30 minutes of class, the classes join for an Intercambio session. This means learners of English and learners of Spanish interact, talk, and practice their skills. This also means that people who would not speak English or Spanish are now sharing a common ground of interchangeable knowledge.

Here is the testimony of a parent who participated in an Intercambio class: "I was part of the Intercambio Language Classes at Midvale Elementary when my daughter was a kindergartener at the school 7 years ago. Besides offering language classes for English and Spanish language learning parents, the format of the group allows for native Spanish speaking and native English speaking parents to practice their emerging skills together. The exchange of skills and relationships built between native English speakers and native Spanish speakers is what makes this program so wonderful."

The Madison Metropolitan School District partners with La Movida to host a monthly radio show called ¿Qué pasa en nuestras escuelas? (What's happening in our schools?) or ¿Qué pasa? for short.  La Movida & MMSD staff share important information with parents and the community, and also provide time for parents to call in with questions.  The radio show is conducted in Spanish and is a great way for the MMSD to connect and share information with Madison's Spanish-speaking community.  It is our committment to help parents and guardians become more connected with their child's school and to become active partners in their child's education.
